“Whatever you do, don’t eat this bait yourself. Just set it down in the vicinity of an oil-soaked wolf. If they’re desperate enough to eat the microfilm, they’ll come running when they smell the bait. Simply wait for nature to take its course and then all you need to do is search the, uh… byproduct for the film.
I’d offer you my special lupus pupus scupus for the job, but I left it back at the airstrip. I’m afraid you’ll have to conduct the… err… search the old-fashioned way.”

Quick Facts
Walkthrough
The Oil-Stained Wolves are located a short distance south of Tailspin’s crash site, around [59, 39].
Step-by-Step:
Important Tips:
Don’t Attack: If you attack the wolf before using the bait, you’ll have to kill it and it won’t produce any droppings. Target only.
15-Second Cooldown: The Wolf Bait has a cooldown between uses. With 8 pieces needed, this quest takes a few minutes even with wolves readily available.
Ninja Warning: The droppings can be looted by other players. In busy areas, someone may grab your microfilm before you do. Stay close to the wolf as it eats.
Animation Detail: Blizzard went the extra mile here. The wolf actually squats and howls when producing the droppings. Players note the howling is probably from the gorloc spices burning on the way out.
Story Context
This is the payoff for the gorloc spices you collected in A Little Bit of Spice. Tailspin mixed those noxious spices with his emergency rations to create bait that would make the wolves violently ill.
Tailspin’s instructions: “Whatever you do, don’t eat this bait yourself. Just set it down in the vicinity of an oil-soaked wolf. If they’re desperate enough to eat the microfilm, they’ll come running when they smell the bait. Simply wait for nature to take its course and then all you need to do is search the, uh… byproduct for the film.”
He apologizes for the method: “I’d offer you my special lupus pupus scupus for the job, but I left it back at the airstrip. I’m afraid you’ll have to conduct the… err… search the old-fashioned way.”
His completion text: “<Iggy holds his nose as he accepts the microfilm from you.> Yuck, well, we’ve complied with section 8.2, paragraph B of the emergency protocol here and recovered the film. Nothing in the protocol says I’m responsible for cleaning it, though.”
The gnomish military bureaucracy continues: recovering data from wolf dung is apparently covered under “Emergency Protocol: Section 8.2, Paragraph B.”
Easter Egg: The Name
“Lupus Pupus” is a Latin-style pun:
The quest title essentially translates to “Wolf Poop.”
Tailspin even has a specialized tool for this exact situation: a “lupus pupus scupus” (wolf poop scooper). The fact that gnomes invented a dedicated device for extracting intelligence from wolf excrement says everything about gnomish military preparedness.
WoW’s Poop Quest Tradition
This quest joins a proud tradition of excrement-related quests in World of Warcraft. Players have noted Blizzard’s apparent fascination with making heroes sift through dung:

Vikstone's War JournalTailspin handed me the bait. “Whatever you do, don’t eat this yourself. Just set it down near an oil-soaked wolf. If they’re desperate enough to eat microfilm, they’ll come running when they smell the bait.”

He paused, clearly enjoying this too much.
“Simply wait for nature to take its course, and then all you need to do is search the, uh… byproduct for the film.” Another pause. “I’d offer you my special lupus pupus scupus for the job, but I left it back at the airstrip. I’m afraid you’ll have to conduct the search the old-fashioned way.”
The old-fashioned way.
I found oil-soaked wolves in the pools, set down the bait and waited.
Nature took its course.
Eight pieces of microfilm later, I returned to Tailspin with intelligence data that I will never describe the retrieval process of in any official report.
He held his nose as he accepted the film. “Yuck. Well, we’ve complied with section 8.2, paragraph B of the emergency protocol and recovered the film.” He examined it at arm’s length. “Nothing in the protocol says I’m responsible for cleaning it, though.”
Eight pieces of microfilm out of places best not described, and Tailspin still needed to know whether any of his squadron had walked away from the crash, which is Emergency Protocol: Section 8.2, Paragraph C.
